Sensitive Skin
What “Sensitive Skin” really means (clinically)
Sensitive skin syndrome is mainly caused by two core problems:
1) Weak skin barrier
The outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) is damaged or thin → water escapes easily and irritants enter.
2) Overactive nerve response
Skin nerves react too strongly → even mild triggers feel like burning, itching, or stinging.
Why it happens (main causes)
Internal factors
- Genetic predisposition (naturally thin barrier)
- Atopic tendency (eczema history)
- Hormonal changes
- Stress (increases skin inflammation)
External triggers
- Harsh skincare (strong acids, over-exfoliation)
- Overuse of retinol or active ingredients
- Fragrance / essential oils
- UV exposure
- Pollution
- Hot water / sauna
- Weather changes (cold or humidity shifts)
What sensitive skin is often confused with
Many patients are misdiagnosed. It can overlap with:
- Rosacea (flushing + visible capillaries)
- Dehydrated skin (tight + dull but not reactive nerves)
- Allergic contact dermatitis (true allergy reaction)
- Acne-prone skin (inflammation but different cause)
